At a loss for what to do with a free Friday night I reached out to the friendly Facebook community group 'New Wave Of Classic Rock' to see what was on offer and the best recommendation for me was this gig. I was only vaguely aware of Vega so I checked a few songs and liked what I heard so I committed myself and bought a ticket that morning. Let me tell you I was not disappointed. I feel like I haven't been to a gig in a while and this was a good reminder that live music is always better. I was smiling throughout the whole thing.
First up we had Devilfire. Due to unexpected traffic I missed the first half of the set but what I did see I liked. If you're a fan of guyliner, straight long hair and melodic rock and roll then you will like them too. I would say it felt to me like the Scorpions with a touch of Nickleback. Did I buy a CD? yes I did. I've given it a quick spin and although it's good I think it's better live so you should see these if you get the chance. Maybe here?
Next up we had Midnite City. In a similar vein to Devilfire, if you like guyliner, straight long hair (bleached blonde this time), tight trousers and melodic rock and roll you will like these as well. The look and sound isn't anything that hasn't already been done by bands like Poison but I had to ask myself 'Who cares?'. I don't. It's fun music and I enjoyed it. Did I buy a CD? yes I did. Is it good? Yes it is.
Last but not least we have Vega. They came on to an intro track suspiciously similar to the type of one Def Leppard use. With that in mind that's who their sound reminds me of the most. They are an example that shows you don't always need the long hair to be in a good 80s sounding rock band. The set was heavy with ballads (about 50% I think, or at least it felt that way) but that's OK. It's something they are good at. Even though for most of the songs they only had one backing vocalist he did a great job of filling the sound and making it seem like there was more. There was plenty of energy and jumping around. What good time rock music is all about. Did I buy a CD? yes I did. I didn't know any songs from any band before this gig but I would now consider myself a fan of all three of them. A great night all round.
